Hi Kathy,

My great grandparents were Alfred MARTHERS and Emily MATHER-Being an old CT yankee both names are pronounced with an "r" -like car- in New England. However, our family, to distinguish between the two names, we say Mather with the short a and Marthers heavy on the r!
