kathy, my father harry emigrated from the town of macclesfield in cheshire, england in 1920 , alone, when he was 17. we pronounce our name with a soft a , as does the beaver.we always considered that the scots pronounced their name with a long a, and several scottish people we know pronounce our name that way.,however most people do and we get tired of correcting them. we're probably all related somewhere alon the line
