The name Mathers originates from 'The Mearns' area of Scotland near Laurencekirk. History states that way back in the 1300's there was an area called Mathers where the family Barclay took the name. The Barclays of Mathers. They built a fortress near a little town called St. Cyrus on the North East Coast of Scotland. There is a tale that is told...the unruely people living in Mathers killed the sheriff and made soup with his remains!!! There is also a monument that stands on one of the hills in the Mearns. Three farms, in the area exist today namely West Mathers, East Mathers and the third name escapes me. This story is in print and many in the area are aware of the Mathers!!
