I am not sure. John Mathews had one son that I know of, William Mathews, b. 1791 Edgefield Dist., SC, d. 1847 Crawford Co., GA. He married Sarah Ann Nutival in 1815, in SC. They had 4 children; Samuel, b. SC, killed in the Mexican War; Nancy Ann, b. SC, married a Patterson; Martha E., b. SC, married Orris Q. S. Harris in Crawford Co., GA, 23 Apr 1844; and James Madison, b. 10 Oct 1816, SC, d. 24 Jun 1884, Echo, Dale Co., AL. I am descended further from James and wife Mary Jane Preston's oldest son, William Eldridge Mathews.
It's conceivable that John had more than one child; also that John had other siblings, as well.
I have found in Roberta, Crawford Co., GA, a grouping of Mathews graves. It would seem that families migrated together.
What part of GA do your people come from?
