Mahlon Matlack of Waterford township, NJ
Mahlon Matlack
Mahlon Matlack seems to be very obscure. He was born in southern New Jersey about 1762, but I'm not finding Mahlon Matlack in a census anywhere in the state until 1850. He must have lived close to Ellisburg, NJ which was in Waterford then Delaware Township, Gloucester County (later part of Camden County). Delaware Township became Cherry Hill Township in the 1960's.
Mahlon Matlack should be a son of Benjamin Matlack and Susanna Hewitt, who were married 14 March, 1749 at Chester Meeting in Burlington County. Benjamin Matlack was a son of George, who was a son of William Matlack, the original settler (1648- ). Mahlon Matlack was probably the youngest of the five known children of Benjamin and Susanna (Hewitt) Matlack. His siblings were Charity, Terissa, Caleb and Avery.
Besides his 1850 appearance in the 1850 census, there are three records documenting Mahlon Matlack's existence and approximate loction.
Mahlon Matlack was among the subscribers to a school to be erected in 1806 at Ellisburg, Waterford township, NJ. He had a daughter born in 1804 (when he was 42), but probably had other children before then who were old enough to attend school in 1806.
Mahlon Matlack's name appears on a list of persons who subscribed sometime after 1803 to the Haddonfield Library. This library had been organized by the Society of Friends in 1803.
The name of Mahlon Matlock of Waterford township appears on a list of persons living in New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania who subscribed to "Galloway's Commentaries", published in London in 1802 and reprinted in Trenton, NJ in 1809. Source: Galloway, Joseph. Brief Commentaries Upon Such Parts of the Revelation and Other Prophecies as Immediately Refer to the Present Times. London: Printed, 1802. See: http://books.google.com/books?id=BhU3AAAAMAAJ&pg=PA409http://books.google.com/books?id=BhU3AAAAMAAJ&pg=PA409. This is a long, complicated and rather radical kind of text, which probably indicates that Mahlon Matlack was not a Quaker, or that he had left their society.
In 1850, Mahlon Matlack was 88 years old, living with Joseph Wilson and his wife Margaret, and four children of a first wife of Wilson's. Mahlon Matlack's daughter Margaret, born about 1804, first married John Reeves in 1833.

John S Reeves and wife were living in Upper Alloways, Salem Co., NJ in 1840. They had no other household members. John Reeves had died by 1846, when Margaret remarried with Joseph Wilson. They lived in Woolwich Township, Gloucester County, NJ --probably in or near Swedesboro.
