I've always wondered whether it had Roman roots, as it is common throughout the Mediterranean region and southeastern Europe, and I have been told by Italians that it has (several) meanings depending on exact spelling.</br></br>BTW, I understand that Clement Matta, who posted to this board, recently passed away.
