Hello Jacob F. Mattern,
my name ist Wolfgang D. Mattern and I´m living in Germany. I just saw your message in the genealogy forum posted and I thought about what you wrote. In the last years I researched about the Mattern family and I found out that your grandpa and my grandpa are brothers.
I was born in 1953 in Biesenthal near Berlin. My Father named Johann Mattern is born 04/20/1930 in Siegenthal. His Father (my Grandfather and his family) lived in Siegenthal around the year 1940. My Father is a son of Phillip Mattern born 03/20/1896 in Siegenthal. Phillip lived together with his wife Maria Elisabeth Mattern who was born 05/30/1896 in Siegenthal. My Grandpa Phillip's (1896) father has parents named Phillip Mattern and Helene Mattern (born as Schweitzer). And my Grandpa's mother is a doughter of Johann Mattern and his wife Katherina Elisabeth Grimm.
Siegenthal (called Berehy in poland) near Sanok is a small City in the middle of Galiza (today Russia). Galiza is situated near of Bandrow, Croatia Dobromil.
Nearly all Mattern families have a confession called evangel. Augsburgerisch.
The first Mattern here was a man named "Adam Mattern", a farmer with 5 family members from Rockenhausen (born 06/12/1784). I think that he came from "Schwaben" in the south of Germany. Other families during that time in Siegenthal were Schwager, Lutz, Linder, Trennback, Schäfer, Wullle, Rub, Heß, Krebs.
In 1940 the Nazi Adolf Hitler and the russian dictator Stalin made a contract. All german citizens living in Siegenthal and Galiza were forced to give up their farms. Stalin supported this deal by giving food and oil to the german army. The Mattern family and all other german citzens in Galiza had to go back to Germany. There they founded new farms in the near of Posen (1940 Germany and today Poland).
In 1945 our family lost their new farmland again. This time to the russians and again they went back to Berlin.
My parents went to "West-Germany" near Dortmund.
To get you some more information about me. I am still living near Dortmund in a town called Arnsberg and I have a wonderful family with one son that is 20 years old. I am self employed with a computer company.
Actually I know a lot more details about the Mattern family because I am trying to write some sort of chronology for our family but there is still a lot of research work to be done.
Maybe we could stay in contact to trade information about our relatives.
I would really love get more information about you and your family.
I hope, I could help you with my informations about the Mattern family,
Best regards,
Wolfgang D. Mattern
