Clyde,
Care needs to be taken not to place too much emphasis on the original spelling of our Mawyer name. While that spelling can be traced back to John A. Mawyer Sr. born in 1792, from that point back the spelling takes many forms. Jacob, the father of John A. has his name spelling Mayer in the 1785 census. Jacob had a brother Christopher who spelling his last name Myers. Their father John has his name spelling Moyer in the 1790 Pa. census. John's father Jacob has his name spelled Mayer on a 1734 deed. These oldest known members of our family were members of the High Dutch Lutheran Church in Pa. As we all know the Pa Dutch were not Dutch at all but were early German settlers.
While the original spelling of our name is not sure at this point, it is more than likely not Mawyer and the family history clearly indicates that our roots are German. Please give you father my best reguards. He is a fine man that I have had many pleasent conversations with.
Marshall Mawyer
