Alison,
I've found a Laurance Maxton, christened 24/06/1744, (not 1754 -- after all this time, 10 years out is nothing!)in Auchterarder, Perthshire, son of James Maxton and Margaret Donaldson, who also had William (1740) and James (1742), but no record of a marriage, that I've found. There was a James Maxton christened in Crieff, Perthshire in 3/12/1710, son of William M, christened 17/3/1675 in Fowlis Wester (the Maxton's home parish),(married 26/9/1697 Agnes Tayzlier - producing 6 sons) who was probably the son of David M, born c. 1650. Laurence is an uncommon Maxton family name, luckily for you.........

Good luck,

Rob
