You are right about the speculation but the evidence that I see points to the invasion by William the Conqueror as the French background of the name.It could be that some other Mayne from some other area was integrated into the family tree. Or perhaps a person took the Mayne name as a convenience.A demographic map of England (ancestry.com) shows that the Mayne name is predominant in the Devon area.My problem is that the source documents (Hoares History) that I have found do not list John Mayne 1614 as the son of Alexander. And if you Google the name John Mayne you will find that in England in this time period his name, John Mayne, is very common. So the parentage of John Mayne 1614 remains a question in my mind until a historic record can be found. The fact that he was in “New England” with other English people in this period of history (the English Civil war, Reformation) would also point to an English background. And as you rightfully point out the relationship between John and Ezekiel is not fully established.A source document for The Beaver of London 1629/30 would be helpful but not definitive.
Thanks
