Terry,

I've tried to write you, but your email address is not valid. I am hoping you will see this post.

At the time we posted last year, I was caring for my best friend, who died of cancer in October. I apologize for not getting back in touch sooner.

Last year, I received a copy of my grandmother's marriage license. Irene Marlett married George Joseph Mizenko; however, the groom's name on the license was not George Joseph Mizenko. It was Joseph R. Whitey. The license lists his parents as John Whitey and Katherine Christoff. At this point, George Joseph (or Joseph) Mizenko is the same man as Joseph R. Whitey. It is possible that John Whitey was his stepfather. The license lists my grandfather's place of residence at the time of the license as Sonman, PA, and his place of birth as Patton, PA. It lists the birthplaces of John Whitey and Katherine Christoff as Houtzdale, PA.

The next twist: a long lost cousin of my mother contacted me through her daughter and we have talked and exchanged some information. She confirms that my grandfather used several names (Joseph Whitey, Joe Whitey, George Mizenko, Joe Mizenko, and possibly Joe Christoff) during his lifetime. She knows that his family spoke Slavic in the home. (A point of difficulty with my grandmother, who did not speak or understand what they said or what my grandfather said when he was angry.)

My aunt provides the following information:

Her father (the man of three names, but which we believe was born Mizenko) had at least 3 brothers and 2 sisters. John at one time owned a bar in or near Indiana, PA; Michael ("Mike"); and Francis were his brothers; his sisters were Mary and Ann. (This aunt is named Mary Ann, for both sisters.)

My mother was allegedly named for both her grandmothers. Her name was Catherine Verna Mizenko. Her maternal grandmother was Catherine Hall Marlett. Without knowing for sure, either her paternal grandmother was named Verna or Verna was her middle name (Katherine Verna Christoff Mizenko Whitey, maybe?).

As you can see, the plot thickens. George or Joe did not make this easy for us!

I hope you'll see this post and write back. I am at the same email address, shown below. You can also post back here.

Thanks, Terry, and I hope all is well.

Will
