Hello,
I also thought that people were illiterate. Or no telling they may spell words by sounding out. I have tryed and tryed to research the McArthur and Vaughn family in North and South Carolina and It puzzles me. There are repeated names over the generations. There are intermarriages in families and the records years ago were burned up. My father told me before he died aboutthe records being burned up.
I remember my dad telling me about PA. And He had a strong desire to go to Austrailia. At the same time my dad was a dreamer. He dreamed of treasure hunting and travel. He was a cross country truck driver for many years and he had been in all 50 states including Hawaii. He had a very rough life at a young age. He told us many stories of hopping freight trains as a kid going back and forth on freight trains from California to Alabama.
My Grandmother is from Selma, Alabama but actually lived on a cotton plantation in her later years about 18 miles out of selma in the country. The property led to the Alabama river. I was about 12 years when my father moved us there for a year. My mother was homesick for her own family in California and he moved us back but not because he wanted to.
I notice in my research the names are the same in the south as in California.
My dads Uncles were: William Alton, James Harvey , Mary, Ollie, and Im not possitive of the rest. My greatgrandmotherSara Elizabeth Vaughn remarried after my great grandfather died in the very early 1900's I know for a fact one of his half brothers was Thomas Hamm I knew him. I can get an Idea of the time my great grandfather Jerry William McArthur died by Thomas's birth. He was born in the early 1900's. I'm not sure if the girls were McArthur or if they were Hamm. They are all passed away.
My dads brother and sisters were.William Alton II,(also known as Barney), David Thomas McArthur, Oscar McArthur, Francis McArthur, Carl McArthur and the twins Edwin Rutherford McArthur and Jimmie Lee McArthur. some people would think Jimmie is a boy, but its a girl. Carl McArthur was Killed at 10 years old in San Bernardino, California in the early 1900's.
My parents named all my brothers as: Darrell, David, Danny,Dj, and myself and sister Kathy and Candy.
Some of my dads brothers were born in Florida,Alabama,California. I know on my grandfathers death certificate it says he was in World War I. I figure the military may have moved him arround.
I really figured by the time you look at it the East Coast was related to the West Coast. I didnt become interested in the search until I move to Florida 8 years ago and found out my grandparents had lived here in the early 1900's. Then I started wondering were we came from. My Aunt also includes Georgia as being another place of relatives. My Grandfather died in 1955. My grandmother Jimmie McArthur lived until 1979. I never asked questions. when your young you dont always think about the history of your family. I was greatful someone in her family had already traced the family tree. It is the Woods family in Alabama, Folmar, Robinson, and many other names. I plan to visit california in april and Im going to visit the gravesites in Ontario, California. They are buried at Bellvue cemetary.
Somewhere on these boards I read 3 mcArthur brothers changed the spelling of there last names and split up going to Canada, west and south because they stold a hoarse. I heard it was a old family story. If anything sounds familiar to anyone Im still searching for history on my grandfathers family. thanks kathy
