Dear All,

I hope that someone might be able to help me.

I am a swordmaker and historical fencing master based in Edinburgh, Scotland. For some years now, I have been researching and teaching historical European swordsmanship. There was a particularly famous Scot by the name of Donald McBane (also recognised and spelled as McBain/Bane/Bain/Bean), born 1664 near Inverness, who was a soldier for most his life and published a treatise and autobiography entitled `The Expert Sword-mans Companion.`

Would anyone on this forum be able to shed light on his family genealogy? It is certainly known that he had children, but if they survived or further details are not known from his writings alone. I would be most interested also to find out where he was laid to rest.

I am presently researching his lifes exploits, several of which took place in my now home town of Edinburgh.

Any help or advice would be most appreciated.

Yours Very Truly,

Paul Macdonald,
Master-at-Arms, IMAF,
Director, British Federation for Historical Swordplay,
Macdonald Academy of Arms
