John McBAIN was listed as both a tailor and an innkeeper in "Clarke, or Newton" in the 1851, 1854 & 1857 editions of The Canada Directory. This location is better known as the Village of Newtonville, Clarke Township, Durham County, Ontario. It had a population of about 250 in 1851 and looks about the same today.
John married Angeline FAIRMAN in the late 1840s and had children 1) James Ryall McBAIN b. Aug 28, 1849 and 2) Anna McBAIN b. Sep 1, 1855 [?]. Angeline was born Sep 10, 1827 in Belleville, Ontario and had previously lived in Mariposa Township, Victoria County.
In the 1861 census Angeline was a widow. She and the children were living with her parents and two younger sisters in Newtonville. On Jun 22, 1864 she remarried to Lyman Tower in Newcastle. Lyman had apparently also lived in Mariposa Township. Lyman and Angeline moved to Guelph, Ontario where they eventually died. They reportedly had one child who died as an infant.
James was a druggist in Sherbrooke, Quebec for many years. He married and had three children. Anna resided in Guelph where she married and had one daughter.
