Joel was the son of Ephraim and Mary Pugh (widow of John..) I only recently learned Mary was a widow although there was speculation.

My 'source' is "US and International Marriage Records 1560 to 1900". It was 'Joel Simmons married Betsey Mc Carroll 1778 VA.' No other information. (An online bit of information.) I don't know what the original source would show.

I think we might be getting close :-) I checked to see if I had any other Pugh/Pew information. I did find early 1700's VA (Richmond) Pugh's, names but no additional information.

Recently there was a source stating Ephraim had left Mary, leaving her destitute and consorting with unsavory women. He later married Sarah Haynes/Hanes.

From a fellow Simmons researcher: Don Simmons..

Nancy, I wanted to find a male, with the last name Seamands, that knew he was descended from old Ephraim and Mary in Virginia. I found Stephen Seamands' father's name on one of the genealogy forums connected to Jonathan, as I Googled I found he was a missionary and later a quite prolific speaker and author and that he had passed away. I found that he had a son who is also an author and a professor at Asbury Seminary. I phoned him and begged him to take the test at my expense. (I used points from buying stuff on my credit card for the past year) He agreed and we just got the results. There is over 95% certainty that we had a common ancestor in the past 8 to 10 generations. He is on a trip now but will put together his male lineage back to Ephraim and Joseph when he gets back. He is not the source of the "new" Ephraim information. Joan Graves who worked at the library in Charlottesville with the historical society of Albemarle County found Mary's plea to the court that her husband had left her destitute after 50 years of marriage and had begun to consort with women of infamous character. So the Sarah Hanes marriage (that I have often suspected to be an error) in his elderly years is probably correct. Joan also found a document where Ephraim assumes guardianship for two Pew/Pugh boys. The wording leaves no doubt that the boys are children of I think John Pugh who went back to Wales to try to claim a family inheritance. Unfortunately Joan has gone through a terrible bout of depression as the result of her grandson's tragic death and has also had a stroke. I hope that she is doing better and have sent her the information about the DNA.************************************************

Hope this makes sense to you. Please 'keep in touch'. Nancy
