I believe your James McCaslin may be the son of Newton McCaslin and Martha Wilson.Newton and Martha were married in Jennings County, Indiana 29 Sept 1825.Newton died in 1832.Martha Wilson then married Col. James Shields in 1835.He was appointed guardian of the three sons James, David, and Robert. On the 1860 Jennings County census records for Vernon township James McCaslin was living with James and Martha Shields. The guardianship record is in probate order book 2 pg 290 at the Jennings County Courthouse. The youngest son Robert was born in about 1828.James was the oldest son and since Newton and Martha married in 1825 it could stand to reason that their firstborn son James could have been born in 1826.
Newton was born in Ky and was the son of David Wason McCaslin who lived much of his life in Johnson County, Indiana.Newton's brother Richard is my ancestor and he and his children lived in Jefferson and Jennings County areas as well.
