William, Paul, Rose & Henry McClarney of Caswell Co NC

McClarney researchers,

I've been spending some time in the NC State Archives lately trying to untangle the Caswell Co NC McClarney lines. I have a lot of good information (land records, will records, estate sales, etc) that I'll post to my website and gedcom hopefully in the next couple of weeks. I'll post the link here when I get all the info compiled.

In the 1786 census of Caswell Co NC, Henry, Paul & William McClarney all appear as heads of households. Of them, William appears to have been the eldest, or at least he passed before the others as Henry was admin on his estate.

I'm still working hard on unraveling the Henry(s). There was at least 1 Henry and possibly 2 Henrys living in Caswell Co (formerly part of Orange Co NC) in the later half of the 1700s. I am still researching the land/will/grant records to try to determine whether they refer to one Henry or two different Henrys. Any proof, anyone?

Yet another Henry seems to have been born ~1800 (whom I call Henry Jr because that's how he was listed in McClarney estate sale records). There was a 20-something Henry (perhaps Henry Jr.?) listed in Rockingham Co NC in 1830 with a wife and a bunch of daughters. Rockhingham Co is next to Caswell Co. Then, there's a 30-something Henry in Henderson Co KY in 1840 with a wife, a son, and even more daughters. He and his wife (perhaps Elizabeth Baldwin?) live next door to some Baldwins. This is all just my Henry Jr Theory, though, and that connection/migration still needs to be researched. BTW, this Henderson Co Henry had a son named... Henry :-)

That being said, I've seen some family trees where researchers have indicated that Henry, William, etc were born in Killarney, Ireland in the early 1700s. Does anyone have PROOF, bible records, etc of that? I have been unable to locate anything that proves/disproves that definitively. If you have any info, please post it and cite the source here.

Lastly, other family trees posted online have shown that a Henry McClarney was the husband of Rose/Rosannah. According to the many land records that I have found in Spotsylvania Co, VA (where Paul McClarney lived in the mid-1700s), Rose was in fact married to Paul, not Henry. Rose had a son named Henry, as is evidenced by her will.

I'll be looking at more NC/VA records soon to see if I can find any others that pertain to the McClarneys. If you have anything to contribute, please let me know. Thanks!

Elizabeth Rochelle Heyman
