Rosannah McClarney, d ~1824/1825, Caswell Co NC

Here's a summary of the info I've found on Rosannah McClarney; most of this comes from the NC Archives & Genealogical Services Department. I'm posting this here because I've been contacted by many McClarney researchers who don't have ready access to this research material.

As I stated in my previous posting about Paul McClarney, there's a line of thought out there that says Rosannah/Rose McClarney was married to a Henry McClarney. While there are many Henrys in our family, I've found no evidence that one of them was married to Rose. Instead, I've found records which indicate to me that Paul McClarney was actually married to Rosannah/Rose Unknown. They had a son named Henry (he died ~1824/1825 in Caswell Co NC).

When reading these records, remember that in early times, names were often spelled phonetically and inconsistently. You'll notice many variant spellings below. Rose's original estate files in the NC Archives have her first name spelled 3-4 different ways. So here's Rose - feel free to send me your comments/corrections:

Witnesses, Jos. Herndon, George Stubblefield, James Somerville. April 19, 1771. (note that Rose wasn’t listed here in 1771, but we see her on Paul’s next land record in 1772; see Paul’s file for more on his other land transactions).

March Court, 1808: ROSANNAH McCLARNEY - Will - w. 23 Oct 1807. Desired clothes divided between Caty Ferrell, Elizabeth Holloway, and Caty Ferrell’s four children; grandson James McClarney son to Caty Ferrell; son Henry McClarney. Exec: Capt. Meredy Price. Test: Robert West, Polly Price. Meredith Price qualified.
(note that Caty's son James was her only child to carry the McClarney name; her other 3 children were Ferrells.)

1789 McClarney, William (file is marked “may be two estates” by archivists as is appears that two different Caswell Co. Williams had two different McClarney administrators appointed - Paul in 1789, Henry in 1798).

Inventory of the Effects Property Belonging to The Estate of MRS. ROSE McCLARNEY decd. 22nd Jan 1808 by Meredith Price executor; viewed at the NC State Archives in 2005. Note that this is a partial list, other items were illegible: one bed and furniture, 2 chests, one frying pan, one pewter dish, pewter spoons, one coffee mill, one sugar box (tin), one candle mold, one box smoothing iron, one stone jug, one bottle, one butter pot, one raw cowhide, 2 tin coffee potts, one tin teapot. Sundry Accts as follows: Jesse Dalton on act $3.65 cents, ? Humphries 1.50 cents, John Swan 2, Henry McClarney 4, Cash in the hand of Obediah Holloway 2. Meredith Price exec.

Account of the sale of property belonging to Rose, viewed at the NC State Archives in 2005: The Estate of ROSSETTE McCLARNEY decd Meredith Price Executor the 27th of May 1808 as follows: William Richardson, Obidiah Holloway, Thomas Ware, Major Price, Mrs. Catherine Ferell, William Pinix, Edward Lewis, Meredith Price. Some of the items sold included one flax wheel, plates, featherbed, furniture, walnut chest, frying pan, coffee pot, earthen ware, etc.
