Hugh McClary - Augusta County, VA

The lineage of Hugh McClary has been difficult to trace. Chalkley's Cronicles include the following records that we believe apply directly or indirectly to Hugh.

"27th April, 1801 - Mary and Robert McClary, administrators of Hugh McClary."

"1789 - November 21, Peter Burns and Jane Miller, daughter of James Miller, (consent); surety, Francis Huff; witnesses Ro. McClary, Wm Black."

The first entry suggests that Mary was Hugh's wife and Robert a son. The second that Robert was born before 1768 and Hugh was most likely born before 1748. I initially believed that Robert (the witness) was Hugh's son and by doing so found it very difficult to get the pieces to fit. It turns out that Robert (the administrator) was Hugh's son and Robert (the witness) was Hugh's brother.

I couldn't figure out how the names Hugh and Robert both showed up in the family when "Land Grant John McCleary" only mentioned three sons in his will; James, John and Samuel. That was until I realized that the father of Hugh had more sons than he had brothers and named a son after a brother of Hugh's mother. I believe her oldest brother was Robert Young.

John McCleary (McClary), the son of "Land Grant John McCleary" married (I believe) the daughter of Hugh Young and had three sons that I can identify. They were Hugh, Samuel and Robert. I believe James belongs between Samuel and Robert but I can't find him and he may have died young. I will follow-up with a post showing how I arrived at my conclusions and a lineage chart of how it all fits together.
