Dear Rick,

Can you give more specific information about your ancestors? If you could give the names of your mother's parents that would help a lot, but any names, dates, and places would help.

I did find a J. D. McClatchy and Ollie ROOD married, 18 December 1889, but I don't know who his parents are.

Also in the same county are: Thomas C. EVANS and Stella MCCLATCHY married, 25 February 1895. Stella is the daughter of James Franklin 'J. F.' MCCLATCHY and Lucy Ann Alexander ROBISON. J D is the son of Albert Alexander 'A. A.' MCCLATCHY Sr and (Frances) Catherine 'Frank' COLE. (Who are my great great grandparents.)

I am not aware of a claim to descent from General Sam Houston in this branch of the family -- but I am aware of a Houston claim among their cousins.

Specifically, A A had a brother Allen McClatchey and his wife Mary, and Allen had a son Rev. William Hamilton McClatchey, m. 1st Mary James (no children) and m. 2nd Eliza Louisa Blakeway (she was previously m. to a Capt Wingo). They had numerous children, including James David 'J.D.' MCCLATCHY Sr. JD Sr m. Catherine Susan HOUSTON.

Catherine Susan Houston McClatchey claimed to be a great niece of General Sam Houston, and claimed Cherokee ancestry through his relatives. She even made application to the Guion Miller commission, but was rejected. I have obtained a copy of her application which includes genealogical information she provided. However, she did not really understand what was being asked of her, and her answers to the specific legal questions weren't very explicit, hence her claim was rejected.

I would guess that you are likely to be related to this family, as it is the only branch I know that has a claimed connection to General Sam Houston. I have made an attempt to find a relationship, but if it exists it is not in the genealogical materials available online, which are admittedly, not complete. You will find that genealogy online at:

General Sam Houston was married three times, and his second wife was Cherokee. However, the web page above does not trace any children from his first two wives and I don't know if they had children or not. He was married by Cherokee custom to Tiana/Diana for six years. You will want to check the Houston genforum; at this point nobody knows if Sam and Diana had children or not. You will find other researchers who claim descent from Sam and Tiana working on this question, perhaps they can help you.

I am very interested in corresponding with you, and I believe that if you are able to provide the names of your grandparents we will be able to find where you fit with this family. Please email me directly with any additional information.
