Taken from the History of Clinton Co., Iowa 1879

John McCloskey, of Camanche, was born in Alleghney Co., PA. in 1823; emigrated West in 1836, locating in St. Louis until 1840 when he came up to Davenport, Iowa. In the Fall of 1854 he located in Camance where he pursued the sawmill and lumber business. From 1845 to 1854 he was most of the time in Oregon and, while in that state, met and married (1854) Miss Sarah E. Oxner, a native of Kentucky. She died in 1860 and he married again in 1861 Miss R.A, Lawton of Clinton Co., Iowa., a native of Illinois. They have 2 children: Lottie and Horace.
