Patrick/Frank/Kitty?? McCluskey emigrated to USA 1860s/70s

I am the great grand daughter of Charles McCloskey who emigrated to New Zealand from Ireland in 1879, with his wife Ellen and baby daughter Sarah Jane. I believe he came from either County Donegal or County Tyrone.
His siblings Patrick (who married Mary Cunningham), Frank (who married Lizzie McCluskey) and Kitty (became a nun in Dubuque, Iowa in 1877) emigrated to New York in 1860s/70s. I would appreciate any help at all with learning about my ancestors, particularly as I am unfamiliar with how to access USA genealogical records.

With thanks, Erin Horgan (NZ)
