I don't recall seeing any record of religious affiliation for the early McColgin's. Edward McColgan, as of now the family patriach, left a Will (proved Nov 1812 in Green Co.) stating "I give and recommend my soul into the hands of almighty god that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in desent christial burial at the discretion of my executors nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of god that gave it..." (sic).
No mention of a Catholic affiliation. Edward's son John's 1838 Will also has a generic profession of faith. I've always thought, most likely, the family was Protestant Irish from Ulster. I don't know if many Irish-Catholic families settled among the Ulster-Scots Presbyterians in the Valley of Virginia. It is an interesting question to investigate.
