I am descended from Gavin McColl, son of Hugh McColl of Avondale's first marriage. He was married three times. James McColl was a son of this marriage, I believe his mother must have died in childbirth or similar as she died on 8 May 1841, and in the census of 1851, which was taken on 31 March 1851 James is aged 9. Janet Wiseman is named as his mother on his death certificate, which was witnessed by his son, Hugh.

There is a gravestone in Strathaven, Lanarkshire with the following inscription:

Erected by

Hugh McColl Hookhead Avondale
in memory of
Janet Wiseman, His wife,
who died 8th May 1841 aged 36 years
also of
Janet Morrison, his wife
who died 5th June 1859 aged 35 years
also of
Jane Strang, his wife
who died 20th June 1880, aged 67 years
also of the above
Hugh McColl who died at Hookhead
25th April 1883, aged 81 years
also of
William McColl. His son who died
13th June 1847, aged 9
also of
William McColl. His son who died
11th January 1858 aged 6 years
also of James McColl. His son
who died 1st October 1868. Aged 33 years
also of
Mary Fleming (beloved wife of James McColl, son of the above)
who died at Hookhead 24th March 1889, aged 51 years.
James McColl
died 29th March 1911 at Hookhead in his 70th year.

Hookhead was a farm in Avondale parish, Lanarkshire.

As you can see James took over this farm from his father.
