My great great grandfather, Hugh MacColl, born in Glasgow 1819, educated in the Highlands, probably Appin, (thus could speak Gaelic) migrated to Australia (Melbourne)from Durham in 1853.

He, and later his son, James Heirs entered the Victorian Legislature at different times. The son, was in the Foundation Australian Parliament, 1900, later, in The Senate until 1914.

Their biographies are in the Australian Dictionary of Biography

The Clan Genealogist, H G MacColl listed my line as from the C5 line of MacColl - there being so many Hughs in the family he coded them (Canon MacColl of Fort William (1840-1904) is in that line)

I was in Appin for a few days in 2000 and spoke to a couple of MacColl - rare there now - mostly migrated to Nth America & Australia.

The burial stone for Stewart of Appin is at Appin Graveyard, removed to that place from Culloden in 1906. The deaths at Culloden are listed as 22 Stewarts and their main retainers MacColl with 18 dead and Maclaren 13 dead plus others alltold, totalling 92 dead.

"Hopes Good" was a motto from my great great grandfather pen.
