Campbell-MacColl

I am researching my wife's Campbell ancestry which is confirmed through 10 generations back to Robert Campbell (1673-1725) of Scotland who moved to Tyrone County, Ulster, Ireland and then to Boston, MA US married Janet Stuart, then moved to Voluntown, Ct. I have been unable to find any birth records for Robert in Scotland OPRs. One of my wife's Campbell cousins did a 25 marker DNA test and it came back R1a1 ( most standard for Donalds), not the standard R1b1 (for most Campbells). After much readinng I found that the MacColl had been associated also with Campbells. Does anyone have any ideas where I might confirm this connection or possible name switch. It is unconfirmed but suggested that Robert Campbell came from Campbelltown Scotland. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
