On the internet, in a biography about Canon Malcolm MacColl
it says he was son of a Scottish farmer (crofter or laborer) in Glen finnan -
the father died when Malcolm was still a boy.

Malcolm married Consuelo Albinia Crompton-Stanfield - which might
help you in your search for family.

The article says Malcolm's brother Hugh was a mathmatician.

in an article about Hugh MacColl:

"Hugh refused education by Gladstone as he refused to be an Anglican priest.
He nevertheless became a significant figure in the history of symbolic

"a few years after working in different areas of Great Britain MaColl moved to
Boulogne-sur-mer, France - he became a French Citizen.

Wikipedia says:

son of poor Scottish crofter or laborer in Glenfinnan - who died when his son was a boy.

You might start looking at that area of Scotland for family.
