My grandfather was called Gavin Campbell MacColl, and I agree this might seem unusual given that the McColl/MacColl clan are an offshoot of Clan Donald - where the forename 'Coll' was common. However, the MacColls did side with the Campbells at some points in their history and this use of the name may have been to honour this alliance.

The MacColls had an even closer allegiance with the Stewarts, but that is another story.
