Hi Mark, you have asked about the McColls of Appin and mentioned that they went to New Zealand looking for a better life. My family traces back to John MacColl who married Catherine MacIntyre on 29th May 1855 John was an agricultural labourer I believe in Appin Argyll, they had the following children
Hugh b 23rd July 1855
Hugh b 30th April 1857
Archibald b 2nd April 1859
Mary b 25th August 1863
Ann b 29th March 1866
Jessie b 23rd April 1869
Samuel b 4th August 1871

Mark I hope you can follow this next part.

Hugh MacColl b 1857 married Christina MacColl b 1849 her parents were Archibald McColl and Christina McColl nee MacIntyre. Hugh & Christina married on the 28th May 1878 and had the following children,
Mary Anne b 1878 d 1879 ?
John b 1879 d 1943
Christina b 1882 my grand mother d 1969
Catherine b 1885 d 1970
Archie b 1887 d 1965
Mary b 1889 d 1954
James b 1892 d 1969

From the above you will see that I had a Christina MacColl as my grand, great and great great grandmother so I'm sure this info is correct.

Archibald & Christina's were married 28th June 1844 ref OPR 525/0020/0237 Lismore Appin & Duror.

Hope this helps in some way. Are you in New Zealand ?
