Major McCombs Rutherford/Cleveland County, NC

Major McCombs was born abt 1783 in Va. I think he had two brothers: Shadrack and George. I don't have anything to prove that.
Major's wife was Mary Ann. I don't know her maiden name.
I read somewhere that Major and Mary Ann were both killed and scalped by Indians. It said that it was the last Indian attack of the Cleveland County area. Has anyone else heard this? I don't know if it's documented somewhere or if it was something passed down in the family.
Also S.C. Jones who wrote "The Hamrick Generations" stated that Major's wife Mary Ann was thought to be a witch. I don't know why they thought that, if they actually did. They lived to be around 80 yrs old.
They are buried in a family cemetery. Their daughter Cynthia married a William or Bill Smith. Bill and Cynthia's daughter Isabell married William Mayberry Bowen, they are my 3rd gr grandparents.
I haven't found anything on Major's parents or where in Va he was born. I'm working on a family tree scrapbook and I want to add some family stories, pictures, etc. I appreciate any help!!
Lisa
