Charles McCombs 1826-1900

I have hit a dead end on Charles McCombs. He was born in Rutherford County in about 1826 (he kept changing his age on the census, getting younger as he got older), and died after 1900 (last year he is shown on a census), presumably in Cleveland County, where he was living. He married Louvisa McDaniel. I suspect he is related in some way to William Mathis McCombs, as William had a son named David Ivey McCombs, and Charles had a son named Ivey McCombs. I have yet to research the Ivey connection. I have found a McCombs in Alabama who was married to a McDaniel who is about the same age as Charles, I don't know if that is coincidence.

I am having such trouble with Charles and Louvisa - no marriage records in either SC or NC (No. 1 Township in Cleveland County, NC bordering Cherokee County, SC) that I have been able to find, no death records for Charles, and some of their children show up on one census and are heard from no more, presumably dying young, so I can't work backward from the children. Also, No. 1 Township, Cleveland County, is just a couple miles from Rutherford County line.

Any suggestions, information, hints will be appreciated.
