I'm unsure if the George McCombs in my family tree is the same George McCombs you're looking for. Oddly, some of the info is similar but other details are different. I'm about 99% postive that the George McCombs in this story below was my great-great grandfather's brother, who lived in Albia, Iowa, about 30 miles west of Ottumwa.

ALBIA ELOPERS CAPTURED
George McCombs and Mrs. Sperry Are
Traced to California--Will Be
Brought Back By Sheriff

ALBIA, Ia., June 30, --(Special)--George McCombs and Mrs. Sperry, who eloped from this city in the early spring, have been located in California. They were traced from St. Louis to Salt Lake City, via Kansas City, and from the Mormon town to California, where they were arrested. Sheriff Doner started for California yesterday, and will return to Albia with his prisoners within a week.
