I've read several of the posts here re: John and Hannah McCourtney. I'm researching a Hensley family; Willis Hensley married Susannah, supposedly Susannah McCourtney, sometime before 1816. They are named in the estate distribution of Willis' father, Davis Hensley, who owned land in the St. Louis area, circa 1803-1814. I have a copy of the early land records for Missouri (French and Spanish land grants), where a Joseph McCortney is shown as owning land in New Madrid prior to February 1806, living next door to Isaac Thomson/Thompson (another Davis Hensley child married a Thompson). Mew Madrid in 1806 was part of Louisiana Territory, it wasn't really Missouri yet. Probably doesn't help you, but it certainly is an early McCourtney in Missouri. I can't find anything about a Joseph McCourtney, but wondered if he might have been related to your John. The Hensleys originated in Virginia, I believe, and migrated to St. Louis via South Carolina (1790-1798) and Kentucky (1798-1800).
