James R. McCourtney of Wheeling, West Virginia
Posted by: Annie Crenshaw (ID *****0350) Date: November 07, 2005 at 18:44:30

James R. McCourtney, born c. 1830 Virginia, married (1) Matilda Hadden in 1859, Wheeling, Ohio Co., Virginia, and (2) Edmonia Carter (after Matilda's death in 1871). Matilda was the daughter of Wheeling merchant and civic leader ALEXANDER HADDEN (c. 1802-1858) from Ballygawley, Co. Tyrone, Ireland.

James McCourtney was a prominent businessman in Wheeling, West Virginia in the 19th century, with the Bellaire Nail Works, Warwick China Company, the Wheeling & Elm Grove Railroad Track (street car system) and other enterprises.

McCourtney is a collateral line (not my direct ancestors, the HADDENS) but I hope this information may help other researchers.
