Been awhile since you posted the above, but was wondering if you found Newton Moore anywhere else?
I found his Civil War records and he died in an Old Soldiers Home and hospital in Indiana on May 31, 1913.A report dated 1890 said he was injured by the administering of chloroform while in the service; he must have been assumed to be dead, because his wife was awarded a 'widow's pension'. In the hospitals where he received treatment, he was listed as a widower. They were both drawing pensions at the same time--nowadays, computers would catch that. Well, it was less than $30. a month and she had 4 kids and a small farm, with lots of trees on it,
uncleared land. They sold wood for heating and cooking some of the time. He did list his sister as Elizabeth Hammel. She liived in Canton, Illinois, and he said he lived in Canton, Texas, which does not show such on the 1900 census. I think 1903 was his first hospitalization in Tennessee. I'm thinking the chloroform did some brain damage. What else would it do to you? Cause of death was 'congested liver' for one thing.
Maybe someone else will see this and answer me, per chance you are not available.
