Susan, I did a quick search and found posted March 2003 in the Rootseb archive:

"I have been very interested in the recent McCullough messages with references to three brothers who came from Ireland, and references to other McCulloughs in Tennessee and Indiana.

I have tried for the longest time find any connection between my husband's great-grandfather, Joel McCullough/McCulley, and other McCulloughs in Tennessee and Putnam County, Indiana. Census records indicate Joel was born in Tennessee. Family traditions says it was "Powell Valley," Tennessee which might be Claiborne or Campbell County? Or maybe Greene or Hawkins County? Date of birth for Joel between 1814-1821, depending on which record used for calculating. Joel's father may have been born in Virginia. Family tradition also says there were three brothers and a sister who came from Ireland to New York -- then two brothers came west (Pennsylvania or Virginia, maybe?), sister and one brother stayed in New York.

Joel McCullough married Mina (Jemima) Vestal on 3 May 1839 in Putnam County, Indiana. Joel on 1840 census in Putnam County, p. 692, William and Thomas McCullough on p. 694. Joel McCullough is on 1845 Tax List for Putnam County, Indiana, in Warren Twp., West, William and Thomas McCollough on same tax list in Washington Twp.

By 1850 Joel and Jemima had moved to Iowa with her father and brother. Just seems there ought to be some connection between all these McCulloughs who were in the same place at the same time. Hazel, if you or anyone else out there, can help me overcome this "brick wall" it would be wonderful."

I also found this:

Galt East Cemetery, Grundy County, MO

McCULLEY Joseph Joel
28 Jul 1815
08 Jul 1886
71y 11m 10d.
born Joseph Joel McCULLOUGH in Powell Valley, Claiborne Co., TN.
h/o Jemima (VESTAL) 09 May 1839 in Putnam Co., IN.

McCULEY Jemima (VESTAL)
Oct 1824
Mar 1903 born Putnamville, IN.
d/o William Samuel & Easter (MOORE) VESTAL.
w/o Joseph Joel McCULLEY 09 May 1839 in Putnam Co, IN

My interest and lineage (I believe) is the Gibson County Indiana McCulloughs that originated from South Carolina after immigrating from Ireland.
