From what I have gleaned--the McDevitt /McDivitt/McDavid/McDade ( and numerous other spellings) all originate from a reknowned David Dougherty and his sons and their lines were then known as son of David (McDevitt, et al) They, apparently usually originate from County Donegal. I have found my McD's under every available spelling even in the same place and time, and have learned that if it sounds like it, it usually is.
