Yes it does mean 'son of David', as you pointed out it derives from Mac Daibheid (sometimes Mac Daibhid), although you missed the 'h'.

I'm in the process of trying to get my father (John McDevitt, born in Co Donegal 1937) to document everything that he knows about our ancestors, which he frequently boasts is quite a lot.
