Need help re: John Patrick McDevitt 1850 PA

My family has traced 5 generations back to our emigrant ancestor; John Patrick McDevitt who came over around 1850 through Philadelphia.
I am looking for possible documents in the U.S. that may have the name of John's father and mother who remained in we can continue our search over in Ireland.
Just wondering if any other McDevitts have overcome a similar problem in document research.
Any advice would be appreciated.
