John McDevitt/McDade-Derry to Brooklyn
Posted by: Robert Mc Devitt (ID *****4441) Date: February 09, 2005 at 16:02:48
  of 638

John McDevitt(30) and Ann McGinley(20) sailed to N.Y. 6/8/1850 on the ship Clutha. John was listed as a locksmith. They sailed with three children: William(5), John(3), and Rose(9m). They had three more children: Margaret(b1855),Catherine(b1866), and Hugh(b1869). Family settled in Brooklyn N.Y. and may have gone back to Ireland for a short time. The name McDevitt seems to have been interchanged with McDade. Many are buried in Holy Cross cemetary in Brooklyn N.Y. Believe the family came from Derry(londonderry).
