This may be a duplication of a previous post.Something happened and I lost what I had typed...
My ggrandfather was James S. McDivitt, m Mary Jane Slee in 1851 in Steubenville, Ohio. From marriage liscense it shows his parents as William S. and S.There is a William S. and Sarah in the McDivitt Grove Cemetery. James S. and wife lived in Quincy, Illinois where their children were born.About 1870 he moved to the Des Moines area.I found several references of his family and his Brother George in the City Directores 1878-79 & 1880-81, indicating they were brickmakers.Listed at the same address was a William, laborer, at 12th & York, Des Moines.Somewhere in my notes I have his B 1836 and Mary Jane Slee B 1834 (unverified at this point)
His grandaughter Geraldine, dau of John Marion McDivitt, who was alive at the time we visited her in St. Louis about 6 years ago, indicated that they used to visit with a family in Des Moines and they often came to visit her family in Quincy. Her father was the brother of my grandfather Frank McDivitt. My problem is that I have not been able yet to verify this family thru census records which would show James as a member of William S and Sarah of Des Moines. I do not know where James S. was born. Too many coincidents for there not to be a connection. The following are notes I took from our visit to McDivit Grove Cemetery about 10 years ago.At the time I had no knowledge that William might have been my gggrandf

My grandfather died in 1910 and I have been unable to find his grave in the Woodland Cemetery at Quincy, Il.If, in fact, that William was his grandfather, he could have been buried in the McDivitt Grove Cemetery.I do not know who is the keeper of the records for that Cemetery.Recently I ran across a listing of all McDivitt's deceased in the 1990's.Listed was a Thomas, who had a daughter Cheryl living in OKC.Since I live in OKC, I found her listing which is now in Norman.I Have talked with her and she is to advise me just which relative there in Des Moines areahas been doing their genealogy. So I wait!!!
Hoping I have found a new cousin! do let me know if any of this ties into your family tree.If William does prove to by my gggrandfather, then the history you have of his ancestors will be what I have been trying to verify and find.
Oh, there was one McDivitt, brother of my grandfather who lived in Quincy, Illinois. His wife felt he should change his name to McDAvitt, to better suit his profession as a physician.Geraldine indicated that her aunt did not wish to socialize with the members of the McDivitt family. Even then, we find social climbers.....
Trusting this isn't too long to be a reply in this format.Marie
