Hello Kate; John McDougald and Alexander McDougald Surely Had to be brothers. I do not have posetive proof of that but both of their namer appear on legal documents along with other members of their families. Alexanderand other members witnessed Johns will Alexander was at the dispursal sale with other family members when johns property was auctioned off after his Death.John Gadsden Smith was the one to probate Johns will. Smith was married to Mary Ann McDougald oldest Daughter of Alexander John Mentioned Duncan McDougald of Mississippi as being his brother. Duncan lived in Oktibbeho Mississippi he had three sons Jessie george and Willis. I do not know what happened to the boys after their fathers death.John Smith went to Mississippi and spent several days settelling John McDougalde estate. I do not know if Duncan was still living at the time. John Smith did Advertise in the local paper and sell off Property includeing some slaves.at public auction. He brought one slave back to Gadsden County with him.I have not been able to trace but one of Johns children away from Gadsden County. That is Margaret McDougald She married Joshua English. John McDougald was in North Carolina when he married, The census reports say that Alexander was born in North Carolina. That puts the two of them at the same place at another time. According to the census John was born in Scotland and Alexander was born in North Carolina So John must have came to this country with his parrents. I can remember my grandmother telling me that two brothers came over togather. Ed King whoes mother was a McDougald told me that he rembered being told the same theng by his grandparents. No families were ever mentioned I sasn't intrested enough to ask questions at the time.Alexander and wife Elizabeth their son Duncan and wife Lewese Strickland and son James Another Son Dan and wife Jane are burried at Providence Cemetery in Gadsden County FloridaThey all have headstones. There are unmarked graves next to them that could belong to John and his wife Catherine. It is very easy for me to talk to much when I talk about Genealogy.Maybe I have helped you even if I could offer tou absolute proff they were brothers. If you come across anything that could tie John to family in North Carolina please pass it on There is only one missing link in this country to our ancestoyy. Please keep in touch.
