Hi Eoin,
I think we exchanged mail in 2001, I do now have more info than I had then but still not sure if our McElhinney's connect but there are definitely Jame's.
I don't know if mine is a blood connection or not but the McElhinney's from William/Main Street Raphoe appear to have fostered my late father (Alan Brennan DOB 1925) when he was a youngster.
Dad's mother Lydia (Lulu) Brennan was unmarried at the time of Dad's birth, in 1928 she settled in the US leaving Dad with his grandparents Thomas and Mina Brennan, they seperated and Dad was left with Thomas Brennan a traveling showman.
Dad then came to England with the McElhinney's in 1938 and appears to have stayed with them until he married my mother in 1947.
The McElhinneys were Bernard and Susan (nee Ward)both born in the 1880's and come from Strabane and Lifford area's of Ireland.
Bernard was a Cartier taking the mail from the station to the post offices, they also sold newspaper from their house.
They had at least 4 children James, Anton,Lizzie and Isobelle (Bella) The whole family left Raphoe 1938.
In Manchester the McElhinney's had a tyre and battery business but I do know there is some connection to McElhinney's having connection with a coal yard in Manchester.
I was in contact with this McElhinney's family researcher and if you can connect them I will try to find his e-mail address for you. Many of this family are still in Manchester and names that connect to them are Devany or Delany, Walsh, Mailey.
I think Bernard died in the late 1940's and Susan in 1952, my father took over the house.
Do come back to me if you feel there's any connection.
Kindest regards Jackie (Somerset UK)
