Well, well, well!Imagine my surprise to discover after 43 years of thinking I was of Scottish heritage, I discovered this weekend I am indeed Irish!
My mother came across a U.S. Citizenship paper for a Joseph McElveen from the Ulster County Court in Kingston, NY dated June 12th, 1844.It's lists Joseph as "formerly of Ireland" and renounces his alligence to "Queen Victoria of Great Brittian & Ireland" to become a citizen.
In addition, she also found a letter from a Presbyterian minister, a Thomas McWilliams of the Synod of Ulster dated April 12th, 1840 introducing Joseph as a "upstanding man.... blah, blah," "who with his wife is setting out for America" (his wife is unnamed in the letter)
Aside from the date, the name of the town in Ireland appears but it is unclear... something like Buffars(?)
