Julia McGarry & Thomas McGrath of Montreal
My great-great-grandfather was Thomas McGrath of Montreal who married Julia McGarry, widow of Benjamin Bailey, on 1 October 1838 in Notre-Dame Parish, Montreal. She was the daughter of John McGarry and Mary Tone. Thomas McGrath was a widower when he married Julia, his first wife being Mary Kane.
I am descended from Thomas McGrath's son Denis McGrath. Since I do not know when Denis was born, I do not know if he was the son of Mary Kane or Julia McGarry. Does anyone know what, if any, children Julia had by Thomas McGrath?
Thomas McGrath died at his residence, 17 Colborne Street, Montreal, on 3 June 1864, aged 65, and was buried on 6 June at the French Burial Ground, Cote des Neiges. He was Chief of the Montreal Police 1850-1853 and a member of Montreal City Council for St Ann's Ward from 1854 to 1864.
He was a native of the County of Waterford in Ireland and seems to have emigrated to Canada with his family in the early 19th century. His parents were Daniel McGrath of Lismore(1751-1860) and Ellen McGrath (She was the daughter of Thomas McGrath of Ardagh, nr. Youghal, co. Cork). Daniel died in Montreal at the advanced age of 109 years.
