Rachal,
I have been researching my McGarry ancestors and have come across the Robert McGarry you refer to. I believe he came over from Ireland with his parents, Mathew and (?) McGarry. They must have come into the country near Philadelphia, lived a short period in Bucks County, PA.
Mathew had Robert, Andrew, Margaret, Nancy, John and possibly a Mathew Jr. Mathew's family moved to Jefferson County, VA (now WV). I believe Robert left Jefferson County around 1802 for Neshannock, PA. I found him under the name McGeary in the census. Robert's brother Andrew married Ann Buckles in Jefferson Co. and moved to Sullivan Co, TN. Margaret "Polly" McGarry married a Thomas White in Jeferson Co. and moved to Maury County, KY. John married Anne Burr and settled in Jefferson County as did his sister Nancy who married James Burr (Anne's brother)and also settled there.
I am trying to find the passenger list that verifies their passage to America between 1770-1795.
Robert married Margaret "Polly" Dix and had John, Nancy, Mary, Eliza and Robert, Jr. John married Margaret Wallace and had 12 children. Eliza married a Thomas Pomeroy and had three children.
Hope this helps and that you are still involved in the McGarry family forum.
