Where did fathers family come from

My friends maiden surname is McGhee on her birth certificate her father (born 1904 died 1984)put Brechin Angus as where he came fromin Scotland. She was told that he was brought up by his grandmother in Brechin it is not known if the grandmothers name was McGhee. It appears that he shifted to Australia in the late 1920's or early 1930's then moved to New Zealand where he married her mother in about 1932 and she is the youngest of 10 children unfortunaly the older siblings who might have known more information have now passed on. It is thought that he left behind a daughter in Scotland but no knowledge is available of her name or age or whether he was married to the mother. As my friends father went by the name of Jock McGhee he may have been either John or James or even something different as often Scottish males are called Jock here in NZ. I noticed on the 1881 census (names not available) that 3 people by the surname of McGhee were living in the town and suspect this might be the family she descends from. If anyone knows of this family would they please pass the message on as she would love to be able to contact her Scottish relatives and find out more about that side of her family and about the people she descends from.
