Help for a friend

My friends maiden name was McGhee on her birth certificate her father put Brechin Angus as where he came from. (It doesn't appear that the family always lived in that area the grandfather may have shifted there to obtain work.) She was told that he was brought up by his grandmother. It appears that he shifted to Australia in the late 1920's or early 1930's then moved to New Zealand where he married her mother in about 1932.(both her parents are deceased and none of her older siblings can tell her more information)It is thought that he left behind a daughter in Scotland but no knowledge is available of her name or age. As my friends father went by the name of Jock McGhee he may have been either John or James or even something different as often Scottish males are called Jock here. I notice on the 1881 census (names not available) that 3 people by the surname of McGhee were living in the town and suspect this might be the family she descends from. If anyone knows this family would they please pass the message on as she would love to be able to contact her Scottish relatives and find out more about that side of her family. As without some basic information it is hard to start on a family tree.
