The McGills of Ireland, New Jersey and Minnesota
Posted by: Jean Gross (ID *****6791) Date: August 14, 2008 at 10:47:12

I am looking for information about the Irish home of my g-g-grandfather, Charles McGill, born about 1831-1835 in Ireland, who died in 1879 in Galesville, Wisconsin. He came to the U.S. with his mother, Mary, and at least one brother, Samuel. Samuel served in the N.Y. Infantry during the Civil War and died prior to June, 1870, having sustained some kind of disabling wound in the war. His mother, Mary lived and died in Patterson, Passaic Co., New Jersey in 1874. She is buried in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Totowa, N.J. There was another McGill brother who was a portrait painter in England and apparently died there. In 1854 Charles McGill married Mary Brennan at St. Francis Xavier Church in New York City. They left the east in 1856 and went to Winona, Minnesota and lived out their lives there and in Trempealeau, Wisconsin, across the Mississippi River. Mary Brennan McGill said she was from the same village in Ireland as Charles and had known him from the age of eleven. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
