McGill Family Genealogy Forum
Keith, We must be cousins of some sort, Captain William McGill of Gill Hall, West Jefferson, Pa. is my g-g-g-g-g-grandfather. My understanding is he was born in New Jersey in 1760. Records indicate that during the Revolution he served as a sergeant in Col. Oliver Spencer's Regiment. After the war, in return for his sevice, he was given a land patent, property he called Gill Hall. I feel it's too much of a coincidence, for there to be no connection to a place of the same name in Northern Ireland, but I have no evidence. In Pennsylvania, he was a member of the militia, rising, or elected to the rank of Captain, apparently fighting in the Indian wars of 1793 or there abouts. His son, William Hendersen McGill moved north to what is now Mercer County. My side of the family has been there ever since. My father was born in Sharon, and my Grandmother died in Sharpesville in 2008 at the age of 99.
I'd love to compare notes. Take Care,
